MISSION STATEMENT

 

Jerry W. Hizon, MD, FAAFP, CAQSM is Co-founder and medical director for the OUCH Sports Medical Center.  He attended the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine and was Chief Resident in Family Medicine at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) Medical Center.  Dr. Hizon obtained the Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine through UCSD in 1993.  He currently is assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Community Medicine (UCSD) with the Sports Medicine Fellowship Program.  In addition he is on the faculty at Western Health Sciences (Pomona, CA) and University of California, Davis (UCD) teaching Physician Assistants (PA-C).

Dr. Hizon began private practice in the Temecula Valley, California in 1986 and with Dr. Brent Kay, established OUCH Sports Medical Center in 2001 in Murrieta, and moved to the new Temecula Office in 2005.  He as served as volunteer team physician for Temecula Valley High School and this year marks his 20th Season with the mighty Golden Bears. Through OUCH Sports Med, he helps yearly to perform approximately 2000 free pre-participation sports exams for the various schools and teams in the area, with all proceeds going directly to the individual schools.

Besides private practice, Dr. Hizon has served as medical team physician for the San Diego Chargers (NFL) since 1999 and was chosen to be a sideline physician for the 2003 Superbowl between Tampa Bay and Oakland.  As author of various medical articles and book chapters, Dr. Hizon has lectured nationally and won a national award from the AAFP for his “Family Practice in Sports Medicine” presentation.  In the past he has served as team physician/medical director for the San Diego Gulls (IHL Hockey), San Diego Buick PGA Golf Tournaments, Carlsbad 5000 Race, Palomar College (Winning the National Championship in 1993) and Bud-Lite Triathlon Series.  Of note, he  was the founder of the Murrieta Half Marathon.

Socially, he has completed six full marathons and is active as a cub scout leader for Troop 369 and has served as a  basketball coach for his children’s various teams.  He is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians (FP), American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), Riverside County Medical Society and the NFL Team Physician Society.

 
 

 

 

 

James P. Nevins, MD, FAAFP is board certified in Family Practice and Sports Medicine.  He attended the Faculty of Medicine at the Autonomous University of Guadalajara in Mexico, Medical College of Ohio at Toledo, and residency at the William Beaumont Medical Center in Michigan.  He comes to OUCH Sports Medical Center after 10 years as the Director of Sports Medicine and Head Team Physician at Indiana University in the Big Ten Conference.  During that time, in addition to medically overseeing the varsity athletic program and the graduate and undergraduate athletic training programs, he also participated in studies and authored articles relative to concussions in sport.  He was chairman of the Big Ten Conference Sports Medicine Commitee in 2003.  Prior to that he was the medical team physician for the San Diego Padres for 13 years.  This included covering the 1984 National League Championship Series, World Series and the 1992 Major League All-Star Game.  He was also a U.S. Olympic physician, serving as the Chief Medical Officer for the U.S. teams participating in both the 1989 World University Games in Germany, and the 1991 Pan-American Games in Havana, Cuba. He is fluent in Spanish.

Dr. Nevins has participated as staff physician for Virginia Slims Tennis, the Bud-LiteTriathlon Series, the World Cup Tae Kwon Do Championships of 1986, and Major League Baseball International’s exhibition tour of Taiwan in 1992.

 

Dr. Pamela Wong Simmons, MD is Board Certified in Family Practice.  After graduating magna cum laude from Loma Linda University, La Sierra campus she attended medical school at Loma Linda University Medical Center.  Dr. Simmons then completed residency training at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Fontana. She comes to OUCH after 9 years practicing the full scope of Family Medicine at Kaiser.  Dr. Simmons takes deep interest in her patients and is passionate about whole person care.  She has found the practice of medicine to be intellectually stimulating and professionally rewarding. Throughout her life, Dr. Simmons has been avidly involved in sports including tennis, swimming, basketball, softball, skiing and mountain biking.  She enjoys spending time with her family, friends and church.

 

 

Deana Buan, MS, PA-C is board certified as a primary care physician assistant. Deana graduated from Point Loma Nazarene University with a major in Exercise Science and a minor in Spanish Studies. She then went to Western University of Health Sciences to pursue her Masters degree in Physician Assistant Studies. She graduated at the top of her class in August of 2005. Deana has a special interest in all fields of primary care medicine, especially women’s health, sports medicine, and orthopedics. She also has a love for medical missions and has participated in several medical clinics in Mexico, bringing basic medical care to the underserved. She currently resides in Murrieta with her husband, Patrick. 

 

 

Dr. Brent W. Kay, MD Co-Founder and Executive Director of OUCH Sports Medical Center, is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at Loma Linda University Medical Center and is Board Certified in both Sports Medicine and Internal Medicine.  Dr. Kay completed medical school at Oregon Health Sciences University and then performed his residency training at Loma Linda University Medical Center.  Following his residency, Dr. Kay worked at Loma Linda University Medical Center for nearly a decade before founding the OUCH Sports Medical Center with long-time colleague and San Diego Chargers’ Team Physician, Dr. Jerry Hizon, MD  He has lectured nationally on Sports Medicine topics with a special interest in athletic training and competition.

He is the primary physician and training partner to 2006 World Track Cycling Pursuit Champion, Sarah Hammer. He is also a personal physician to many of the world’s top Professional Motocross racers.  Dr. Kay assisted in coaching the World’s Oldest Ironman Triathlon finisher, Norton Davey, who finished an Ironman Triathlon at the age of 83!

Dr. Kay has been a lifelong competitive athlete and as a former Professional and All-American Triathlete, he has competed in over 100 triathlons including the Ironman World Championship Triathlon in Hawaii.  He later had to give up triathlons due to advanced Osteoarthritis in his right shoulder following seven surgeries for Avascular Necrosis caused by an injury sustained in a car accident. He turned to competitive cycling in 2002 and has competed in the Elite National Track Cycling Championships every year since.
