Jerry W. Hizon, MD, FAAFP, CAQSM is Co-founder and medical director for the OUCH Sports Medical Center. He attended the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine and was Chief Resident in Family Medicine at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) Medical Center. Dr. Hizon obtained the Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine through UCSD in 1993. He currently is assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Community Medicine (UCSD) with the Sports Medicine Fellowship Program.

Dr. Hizon began private practice in the Temecula Valley, California in 1986 and with Dr. Brent Kay, established OUCH Sports Medical Center in 2001 in Murrieta, and moved to the new Temecula Office in 2005. He as served as volunteer team physician for Temecula Valley High School and this year marks his 23rd Season with the mighty Golden Bears. Through OUCH Sports Medicine, he helps yearly to perform approximately 2000 free pre-participation sports exams for the various schools and teams in the area, with all proceeds going directly to the individual schools.

Besides private practice, Dr. Hizon has served as medical team physician for the San Diego Chargers (NFL) since 1999 and was chosen to be a sideline physician for the 2003 Superbowl between Tampa Bay and Oakland. As author of various medical articles and book chapters, Dr. Hizon has lectured nationally and won a national award from the AAFP for his “Family Practice in Sports Medicine” presentation. In the past he has served as team physician/medical director for the San Diego Gulls (IHL Hockey), San Diego Buick PGA Golf Tournaments, Carlsbad 5000 Race, Palomar College (Winning the National Championship in 1993) and Bud-Lite Triathlon Series. Of note, he was the founder of the Murrieta Half Marathon.

Socially, he has completed six full marathons and is active as a assistant scout master for Boy Scout Troop 148. In 2008 they completed the rigorous Sliver Moccasins Trail (53 mile backpack in Angeles Forest) and this year they are attempting Mt. Whitney. In addition he has served as a basketball coach for his children’s various teams. He is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians (FP), American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), Riverside County Medical Society and the NFL Team Physician Society.

Brent W. Kay, M.D. is Board Certified in Sports Medicine and Internal Medicine. He received Program Director™ Certification from the American College of Sports Medicine and was awarded Top Sports Medicine Physician in America in 2006. Prior to starting OUCH with Dr. Jerry Hizon, he worked at Loma Linda University Medical Center for 10 years and was voted Teacher of the Year.

Dr. Kay played football and baseball in high school and was an All-State MVP, however, his athletic career was cut short by a severe shoulder injury sustained in a motor vehicle accident. He spent a month in the hospital after breaking his neck and shattering his shoulder. Following seven shoulder surgeries he developed avascular necrosis (dead bone) and severe osteoarthritis leaving his shoulder essentially useless. Undaunted, he started swimming, running and cycling for rehabilitation and fitness and later competed as a professional triathlete, receiving All-American honors and finished the Hawaii Ironman World Championship triathlon during medical school. As a Masters athlete, he has competed in the World Championships in triathlon, biathlon and cycling and, in addition to several attempts at Cycling's Hour World record, set a National record in 2008.

James P. Nevins, MD, FAAFP is board certified in Family Practice and Sports Medicine. He attended the Faculty of Medicine at the Autonomous University of Guadalajara in Mexico, Medical College of Ohio at Toledo, and residency at the William Beaumont Medical Center in Michigan. He comes to OUCH Sports Medical Center after 10 years as the Director of Sports Medicine and Head Team Physician at Indiana University in the Big Ten Conference. During that time, in addition to medically overseeing the varsity athletic program and the graduate and undergraduate athletic training programs, he also participated in studies and authored articles relative to concussions in sport. He was chairman of the Big Ten Conference Sports Medicine Committee in 2003. Prior to that he was the medical team physician for the San Diego Padres for 13 years. This included covering the 1984 National League Championship Series, World Series and the 1992 Major League All-Star Game. He was also a U.S. Olympic physician, serving as the Chief Medical Officer for the U.S. teams participating in both the 1989 World University Games in Germany, and the 1991 Pan-American Games in Havana, Cuba. He is fluent in Spanish.

Dr. Nevins has participated as staff physician for Virginia Slims Tennis, the Bud-Lite Triathlon Series, the World Cup Tae Kwon Do Championships of 1986, and Major League Baseball International’s exhibition tour of Taiwan in 1992.

Dr. Pamela Wong Simmons, MD is Board Certified in Family Practice. After graduating with honors at Loma Linda University, La Sierra campus, she attended medical school at Loma Linda University School of Medicine. Dr. Simmons then completed residency training at Kaiser Permanente Hospital. She comes to OUCH in 2005 after 9 years practicing the full scope of Family Medicine at Kaiser. Dr. Simmons takes deep interest in her patients and is passionate about whole person care. She has found the practice of medicine to be intellectually stimulating and professionally rewarding. Dr. Simmons has interest in all of family medicine including treating hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol and especially women's health (including annual pap smears) and the female athlete. She has given several community lectures for the female athlete on prevention of injuries, osteoporosis, stress fractures, nutrition deficits and menstrual irregularities.

During medical school she suffered a right knee ACL and meniscus tear playing tennis. After 5 knee surgeries, she still enjoys hiking, camping, mountain biking, swimming, motocross, skiing and paintball. She also enjoys coaching for her children’s soccer, flag football, and volleyball teams. Time with her family, friends and church are important to her. Yearly, she volunteers in medical mission trips to China and other Asian countries providing medical care to orphanages, rural farmers and town’s people. In December 2009, she will travel to Thailand for her next medical mission adventure.

Heather Ontiveros PA-C, ATC comes to OUCH with an extensive sports medicine background. She started her career at UC Davis, graduating with a degree in Exercise Physiology, and then San Diego State University with a Master’s in Biomechanics, specializing in gait analysis and foot mechanics. Prior to becoming a Physician Assistant, Heather worked as a collegiate Athletic Trainer; Head Athletic Trainer for Sports Clubs at UC San Diego. After she moved to Temecula, she worked for Rancho Physical Therapy as their Program Director for Performance Enhancement and Athletic Training. After 10 years of sports medicine experience she returned to UC Davis for Physician's Assistant school and graduated in the summer of 2008. Since graduation she has honed her primary medicine skills at family medicine, urgent care, and most recently Rancho Springs Emergency Room. Heather interned at OUCH while in PA school, and is so excited about returning and building a practice. As an athlete herself she is excited about keeping the active Temecula/Murrieta community Healthy.

Personally, Heather played 4 years of Varsity Soccer at UC Davis and continues to play regularly in the Temecula Valley. At the high school level she competed in varsity basketball and track. When not playing soccer, she enjoys traveling, and spending time with her husband and 1 year old daughter.
